As an advocate for SACI, Mariah helps staff a 24/7 crisis line as well as provide 24/7 medical advocacy with Sparrow hospital’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program in Lansing, MI. In addition to these services, Mariah also does education outreach to the MSU community and the Greater Lansing area as a SACI advocate by providing crisis-intervention at events and staffing resource tables.
In order to be an advocate, she participated in 45 hours worth of training about sexual assault myths, in-crisis intervention tactics, active listening skills, and learning how breaking down privilege in order to work with diverse clientele. SACI’s training taught Mariah how to react with empathy and compassion to survivors of trauma. This experience has given them the ability to better speak up about the different challenges that face survivors and victims of sexual assault.
Through her roles on the executive board (e-board) for SACI, Mariah was able to serve as the Political Outreach Chair. While on the e-board for SACI, she was able to present to numerous student groups about sexual assault awareness including resources, dismantling rape myths, and how to support survivors. She was able to plan multiple events such as a Coffee Talk for students across campus about sexual violence, and movie screenings and discussions in coordination with other community organizations (below are posters created for some of those events).
In the Spring of 2015, Mariah and other e-board members were able to be on the panel “Sexual Assault on College Campuses: Current Initiatives and Future Challenges” in the Gender, Women, and Sexuality: An Undergraduate Research Showcase. Additionally, they have been able to plan events such as MYConsent day, film screenings, and Coffee Talk panels with other affiliated MSU student groups.
